A Weekend Away at Ol Donyo Sapuk: Nature, Laughter, and a Little Bit of Magic

Shared by one of our weekend guests this story captures what happens when you pause, pack up the family, and let Kenya’s landscape and a bit of karaoke work its magic.
I’ll admit we were overdue for a break. Between work, school runs, and the usual city chaos, we were running on fumes.
So when my partner suggested we “just drive out of town for the weekend,” I didn't ask questions.
We packed light, threw snacks in the back seat, and headed toward Ol Donyo Sapuk Resort.
Just an hour from Nairobi. That’s all it took. One hour and suddenly, we were surrounded by trees, fresh air, and a silence that felt like a warm hug.
Day 1: A Walk with the Wild
We kicked off our weekend with a bit of adventure. First stop? Oldonyo Sabuk National Park just a short distance from the resort.
We did a slow, scenic hike up Mount Kilimambogo .Not too intense, but enough to stretch the legs and shake off the city stiffness.
Along the way, we spotted a few grazing buffalo in the distance, monkeys leaping through the trees, and birds we couldn’t name but loved anyway.
The views from up top? Worth every step. You could even catch a glimpse of the Fourteen Falls from certain lookout points.
And on our way back? We stopped at 14 Falls for a quick detour. No boats.
Just the rush of water crashing down, the mist rising like smoke, and that almost meditative sound of nature doing its thing. We stood there longer than we expected, quietly soaking it in.
By the time we returned to the resort, we were famished and exhilarated. Dinner never tasted so good.
Day 2: Just Pure Fun
The next day, we decided: no plans. Just vibes.
We started with horse riding a first for our youngest, and now apparently her new favorite thing.
After that, it was swimming, Jenga, table tennis, and yes, a competitive round of “Kenya at 50.” The gents discovered the pool table and disappeared for a solid hour, resurfacing only for snacks.
And then… karaoke night.
Let me paint the picture: the stars are out, a saxophonist plays smooth, soulful background tunes, and the resort host charming as ever opens the mic.
I wasn’t planning to sing. But somehow, I did. And surprisingly? I wasn’t terrible! The people around, the host, they all clapped like I’d won an award. It was the kind of moment you never plan but never forget.
The best part?
We found out just before leaving that we’d actually booked during one of their special offers. Total win.
They run family-friendly accommodation deals quite often, so keep your eyes peeled. The place is not only scenic and peaceful it’s super child-friendly.
The staff? Warm. Attentive. Like they’re rooting for your rest.
So here’s our review, from one family to another: take the weekend. Make the drive. There’s a good chance you’ll come back feeling lighter, happier, and ready to do it all again.
Oh and check their offers page. You might just get lucky like we did.
